Honoring Heritage

At Ethnology, our name reflects a deep commitment to the study and celebration of culture. We believe that each product has the potential to carry a story—a touch of heritage, a memory, or a glimpse into a cherished way of life. Through our collaborations with local artisans and our dedication to using heritage-inspired materials, we invite you to experience Kenya’s rich cultural legacy. While some of our creations directly preserve traditional customs, others reflect the beauty of local landscapes and the ingredients they provide, capturing the heart of Kenyan culture in its many forms.

Heritage Materials & Craftsmanship

Kitenge and Lesso Textiles
Kitenge fabrics are a symbol of African pride and resilience, worn during celebrations, ceremonies, and as everyday attire. Each pattern and color represents a story or a moment, woven with artistry that has been perfected over time. At Ethnology, we honor this tradition by incorporating Kitenge into our products, creating pieces that bring the warmth and spirit of Kenyan heritage to you.

Brass Craftsmanship
Over thirty years ago, Kenyan artisans began exploring brass, drawn to its durability and elegance. Initially working with materials like animal bones and wood, they transformed their craft, finding new ways to tell their stories through this enduring metal. We are proud to continue this tradition, using brass in pieces like our candle lids, each one a testament to the dedication and creativity of the artisans who handcraft them.

Culinary Inspirations

Our products capture the essence of Kenyan cuisine, influenced by the region’s diverse history and coastal traditions.

  • Swahili Coffee & Tea: Inspired by the spices of the coastal regions, our coffee and tea blends reflect the rich flavors of Swahili culture, shaped by centuries of Arab and Indian influence.
  • Mango Fruit Snack: With roots in the Indian Achari, we’ve reimagined this dried fruit snack with a Kenyan twist, using the sweet, juicy apple mango to bring a new flavor experience to a beloved treat.
  • Lime Jam: In coastal Kenya, lime pickles are enjoyed with nearly every meal. Our lime jam pays homage to this tradition, capturing the zesty, tangy flavors that have become a staple of the local cuisine.

Artisan Stories

Our artisans are at the heart of Ethnology, bringing their skills, stories, and traditions to each piece we create. Through their hands, crafts come alive, passed down through generations. We carefully select tailors, screen printers, and brass, glass, and jewelry artists whose work embodies the essence of Kenyan heritage. With each product, we seek to honor their craft, celebrating the dedication and artistry that makes every piece a true work of cultural preservation.
